The Beatles History

Beatles Books & Authors

It seems like everyone that had any connection with the Beatles has put their version of the story into a book, including May Pang, George Martin, Geoff Emerick, Cynthia Lennon, Pattie Boyd, Peter Brown, Ken Mansfield, Paul Saltzman and anyone else who had a cup of coffee with the boys or their mother, sister, father, cousin or gardener.

There are also hundreds, if not thousands, of Beatles Books written about the Beatles music, concerts, Cartoons, effect on history and any other plausible reason someone can come up with to write a book about the Beatles.

The first Beatles book I read was “Beatles the Real Story 1ST Edition ” by Julius Fast, originally published in 1968. My first edition hard cover copy still bears my 13 year old hand writing inside the front cover that reads “This book is no orphan, don’t adopt it…Signed the Head of the Orphanage”.

Ok, so I thought I was funny even back then. This book, which was published before the band broke up, started me on a life time of reading about the Beatles and everything involved with them. I moved onto Brian Epstein's The Beatles: A Cellarful of Noise: The Real Inside Story. Cynthia Lennon’s “Twist of Lennon ”, Peter McCabe and Robert Schonfeld’s “Apple to Core ” and maybe the most important one for me, Nicholas Schaffner’s “Beatles Forever ”. It was this book that started me collecting Beatles 45s and bootleg albums. This collection of Beatleg albums is what led to the creation of my radio show, Pop Go the Beatles and ultimately the creation of this website. So special thanks to Mr. Schaffner for inspiring me to create some of the best work of my life.

In this section I will be listing and giving my personal review of the books that have inspired me and thrilled me plus the books that I have used for reference material when creating my radio show and this website. In many cases I now have a personal relationship with the author that will allow me to bring out some new insights to these books.

I won’t bore you with some kind of rating system but will let you know which books are essential for Beatles fans with a taste for certain information. We are not all interested in the same aspects of the Beatles careers and therefore I would never assume that everyone has to read a certain book.

I’m going to start with the authors that I have a relationship with and hopefully they’ll allow me to add a few interview style questions to the review. Check back often, as I will be adding more authors.
