Bruce Spizer Books
Let’s start with a series of books that were absolutely essential in the creation of my Pop Go the Beatles radio series. This series of seven books was written and researched by Bruce Spizer. Bruce is a long time Beatles fan (DUHHH!) who is a lawyer from New Orleans. Bruce has also appeared as a guest on one of my shows and sent me an advanced copy of his section on the White Album to help me write my White Sessions show. Bruce has been a good friend and supporter of my “little Beatles projects” for quite some time now and I would like to personally thank him for all his help and guidance.
Bruce’s books, starting with “Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles Records on Vee-Jay
” have become the definitive historical timeline of the Beatles records in America. This first book focuses on the Beatles records released on the Vee Jay Records label. Every album, 45 or EP released on Vee Jay is covered in great detail, including dates of manufacture and release and location of the printing of each label. Almost every label variation (a few were discovered after the book was printed, including one by myself) is pictured and the book includes the complete story of how this obscure Chicago R & B label ended up releasing the first Beatles records in America. There is a chapter on the world’s most counterfeited record 'Introducing the Beatles’ and how you can tell if yours is authentic.
Should you happen to have an authentic first issue copy with the blank back or even the second issue with ads for other Vee Jay artists (known as the Ad Back), you have an album that could be worth over $10,000. This book is now out of print and sells for over $200 on Ebay. I found a few available on Amazon for over $300. It’s that good, as are all of Bruce’s books.
Here is a brief excerpt from the Foreword
written by Perry Cox:
Complete story of the Beatles records on Vee-Jay - how creative marketing turned 16 Beatles songs into a comprehensive catalog of multiple 45, EP, and album releases that, taken together, are worth more today than all other American Beatles records combined.
DID YOU KNOW... Capitol Records initially passed on the Beatles 4 times?
When the Beatles first two US singles were released by Vee-Jay Records in 1963, they were virtually ignored?
When Vee-Jay released Please Please Me as the first Beatles single in the US, the group's name was misspelled as "The BEATTLES"?
Bruce has also written books on the Beatles Capitol Releases on Albums and on 45 RPM records (please, if you don’t know what a 45 RPM record is go to my Facebook or Myspace page to see pictures of hundreds of them). He has written two books about the Beatles releases on their Apple label, one book on Beatles records and one for their solo releases. Bruce finished off his series with two great books called “The Beatles Are Coming: The Birth of Beatlemania in America
” detailing the Beatles arrival in America and Capitol records massive promotion of the band and “The Beatles Swan Song: "She Loves You" & Other Records
.” Swan song covers the American Records not covered in the other books, such as Swan, United artists, Decca, MGM, Polydor as well as the Capitol theme albums and other releases from the seventies and the eighties.
Bruce also collaborated with Perry Cox on their recently released “Price Guide for the Beatles American Records
”, which is a must if you collect the Beatles American records.
My review for these books is very simple…if you collect any of the Beatles records…any of them…you need the book that corresponds with your collection…these books will become your bible. I still refer to them constantly while creating this website…and I haven’t even started writing about the Beatles records…yet.
Bruce’s books are easy to read, compelling and exceptionally well researched, organized and detailed. They are simply the best and most important books on the Beatles American records and the events surrounding their release. And Yes, I have a copy of each of the seven books, most are autographed to me.
Due to these books Bruce has become a consultant for EMI/Capitol and wrote a companion essay for The Capitol Albums, Vol. 1
and wrote the essay that appears in the booklet to The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2
. He continues to serve as a consultant on Beatles projects for EMI/Capitol and Apple. Bruce is a frequent guest speaker at numerous Beatles conventions and regularly appears on national and local radio and television broadcasts. He wrote the questions for the Beatles Trivial Pursuit game, which is coming out in August, 2009.
You can go right to Bruce’s website to purchase your copies and if you tell him you heard about his books at
www.the-beatles-history.com he’ll be happy to autograph them for you. You might be able to find the out of print editions on amazon.com or ebay.
