May Pang Photographs
As most of us know, May Pang spent 18 months with John Lennon as his live-in lover during 1973 and 1974, one of his most productive periods musically, after the Beatles broke up. Her time with John is well documented in the pictures she took and published in her book “Instamatic Karma- Photographs of John Lennon”. In her own words from 10/07:“Shortly after Mind Games was completed John thought it would be good for us to leave New York and be on our own, so we headed to L.A. I hardly had time to pack and tell my mother. I threw a few things together and I grabbed my Nikkormat 35m camera. John later bought me a Polaroid SX-70 for my birthday (as well as a used 1968 Barracuda, which was my very cool first car). John encouraged me to capture our times together. Photography had always been a bit of a hobby for me so this was natural. He really liked my eye for taking pictures and felt I captured him in ways no one else had because of his comfort level with me. In those days no one thought of taking pictures all the time. We always thought there’d be tomorrow. Many of what are now considered historic events, like John and Paul’s only jam session after the Beatles, weren’t photographed. For years, only my closest friends got to see most of these photos, which were literally tucked away in a shoe box in my closet. Every photograph holds a very special memory for me, especially the ones I took of John with his ten year old son Julian.” The photos you see on this page came directly from May’s wonderful book and have to be seen in person to truly comprehend the emotion and warmth that May was able to capture in John. It’s a side of him that a Beatles fan can only dream of seeing. As May said, it was because he had that level of comfort with her. Now, here is the good news, not only can you purchase May’s book, for a very reasonable price, I might add, but she has started offering a few of her favorite pictures for sale as fine art prints. You can visit her website www.maypang.com or to discuss your purchase directly with her go to http://instamatickarma.com/fine_art_prints.html . She told me that if you tell her you heard about her pictures @ www.the-beatles-history.com she’ll autograph it for you. To read more about May Pang click here for her biography page.
