Yellow Submarine Cartoons

When Yellow Submarine was released in June of 1968, I went to see it the our local theatre and really enjoyed it but was already familiar with most of the music (a number of previously released songs were in the movie) or wasn’t crazy about the new songs (“All Together Now” & “It’s All Too Much”...although “Hey Bulldog” was a fun song) so it never really caught my fancy.

Then I had a child and to him it was this wonderful fantasy world called Pepperland with the most beautiful colors and scenery he had ever seen. It totally caught his attention and while watching it a little more carefully with him, it caught mine too. It really is a very sweet tale of Good vs. Evil with the Blue Meanies (BOOOO my son would yell when they came on the screen) trying to take over the world by taking away everyone in Pepperland’s music. Of course the Beatles come to the rescue with great music and release Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and now the eight Beatles use their great music & songs to rescue Pepperland and set everything back to it’s natural colorful, musical state.  He and I still watch it together but usually I want to watch the cartoons and he wants Yellow Sub...anway here are a few facts about the movie.

It was created by United Artists and King Features and produced by old friend Al Brodax who brought along some of his buddies from the Cartoons like Animators Ron Campbell and Tom Halley and Lance Percival who provided the voices of Paul and Ringo.

The movie was released in 1968 and it was released on Home Video in 1987 and re-released in 1997 with Digitally Restored Audio. Though the visuals were not digitally restored, a new transfer was done after cleaning the original film negative and rejuvenating the color. A soundtrack album for this version was also released, which featured the first extensive digital stereo remixes of Beatles material.
Like the Beatles Saturday Morning Cartoons an industry of collectables and Art has sprung up around the project. Ron Campbell and the Dennilu Co. are offering their own Scene Recreations and Sericels and Giclees from the Yellow Submarine.

Here’s what they look like: First are the Ron Campbell Recreations, with my own up first, followed by the Official Apple Corp. products available through the Dennilu Co.
